well I can understand why skulls, blood, bones, etc. are associated with darkness.. because in all actuality they are, but no necessarilly evil..

when Christians see the secular scene giving a groteque and "evil" meaning to such things, it sticks..

that's why when they see Christians with the same imagery they freak.. we give the same imagery different meanings.. period

Actually, we give the imagery its TRUE meaning. The world distorts and shows fear. [Note: please see http://valsignalandet.com/images/dreamfoto/StFrancis_in_Meditation_before_the_cross_and_skull.jpg if picture does not appear]

St. Francis of Assisi meditating before the Cross and a skull!

If you study your Biblical and early Church history you will realize that death and death-related imagery were just ordinary everyday devices of the early believers because death was only the beginning.

Consider this: you wear a cross. In western Christianity the meaning of the cross has been completely lost, it's seen as this nice Christiany thing you wear and makes you look all righteous. Mind you, were they to grasp the actual true meaning of the cross, they would be wearing guillotines, electric chairs and death injection needles around their necks too.

Also consider images such as skulls. In early Church and even medieval history, death was so normal it wasn't to be feared, it was to be expected because everybody died, either at 90 or at 15. So seeing death-related images was as normal to them as it was for us to see sports-related images. The early Christians, during the various sporadic periods of Roman persecution, were known to hide within the ancient cemeteries, tombs and even the infamous Catacombs of Rome to prevent capture; that meant daily 24-hour exposure to the dead, the rotting, the decaying and the diseased. This is probably why western Christians fear death so much because it was always a part of us.

So basically when you see that western Christian go EW at you for that skull you wear, ask them how much they know about church history and about the cross. They might need enlightenment.

I think I need to make an article on Val about this!!
